Today, I went to a place in Permy Jaya to volunteer my time and effort for recycling. I was the second youngest person there. Almost 99% of the volunteer there are already middle aged or arriving there soon.
Most of them have kids themselves and one of them were talking about how she has to give her youngest daughter RM300 every month to supplement her schooling expenses and she only earns around RM400 per month as a chef.
And this auntie were complaining about how her finger joint hurts and another auntie expressed the same pain. It was one of the major eye opener experience for me because for most of the time, I'm surrounded by middle, above middle and rich people and RM300 to them is peanuts. I could spend RM300 in a blink of an eye. And yet here they are, volunteering their time to help conserve earth's resources.
My parent always tell me that it's because my life is too good that when the littlest thing goes wrong in my life, I will sink into depression. Which I admit is true. Compare to previous generations, youngsters today don't take setbacks or failures really well. We are not as resilient as our ancestors and we are more concern about materialistic wealth.
Another uncle told me about a person they visit regularly. Person A had his intestines removed when he was only three years old because it didn't work properly and the doctor told him he couldn't work because if he works, it will worsen his condition. But Person A didn't have anyone to take care of him nor give him money for food so he has to work in order to survive. What's even worse is his current job is in construction.
For Person A, the situation is really damn if you do and damn if you don't.
It really made me think that what I have is really good. It's better than good. :)
